ONLINE Short Courses on Radiation, Biology, and Society
from
Radiation Information for Everyone (RIFE)
Cindy Folkers of Beyond Nuclear and Mary Olson of Gender + Radiation Impact Project are the originators of these classes. Together they bring 60 years of combined experience in analysis, research, policy, politics and support for and collaboration with radiation impacted communities. The classes may also include guest speakers.
These are classes – not a simple series of talks – be prepared to engage in a learning process deeper than passive listening or posing a simple question. Information about Short Courses this Quarter is on this page… details below.
The Short Course offerings are informal education, no credit or certificate* is offered. We use a hybrid of “evergreen” and real time on-zoom discussion. Instructional Presentations are recorded and other resources including recommended reading and other video resources are made available to those who register. At scheduled days and times, real-time meetings via zoom allow for clarification and discussion. We invite participants to reach beyond traditional over-simplifications used to give basic information about radiation in our lives. We will also encourage participants to engage in original inquiry. Watch for new course listings.
Who are these courses for? People for whom understanding radiation is personally important. Anyone who engages with education, research, policy, and practice to preserve and build the health of current and future generations. Anyone who writes on these matters and can demonstrate interest in learning from us.
We are interested in the idea of creating “custom” short-courses for specific groups. *We would also consider partnership with a program or institution that offers CME or other continuing education credits. Please reach out to Mary Olson directly at: gender.radiation@gmail.com.
Radiation Basics — a five week dive —watch for next session in 2024
TOPICS FOR THIS CLASS: WHAT IS RADIATION? CANCER AS OUTCOME; SOURCES OF EXPOSURE; RISKS; DO WE NEED TO TIGHTEN SAFETY LIMITS?
Dr Ian Fairlie and Cindy Folkers offer five weeks of presentations (evergreen—watch at your own speed) - PLUS zoom discussion / Q+A instruction session—90 min each week. Additional course materials will include original papers by both Leaders; a list of citations; and recommended additional reading.
The discussion sessions, led by Mary Olson and Cindy Folkers will be dynamic and include time for participants to network and work together to identify areas where each needs additional information. These are classes, not webinars, and the goal is for each participant to come away with a strong grasp of the topics.
This class is for people who want to be able to understand government, industry and scholarly articles better. It is not really introductory, though we are glad to work with anyone who has the interest to join. There is no considered question that is unwelcome.
Please read through the details—Registration is below.
We ask your commitment to attend all of the "live" sessions, as per the class dates and times.
We look at these matters from a lifecycle perspective and bring a focus on disproportionate impacts tied to biological sex, age, socioeconomic factors, race and a history of secrecy and non-disclosure–our focus is how to better grasp the impacts of radiation in all of these contexts.
Anyone who cannot afford the bottom of the sliding fee scale is welcome to request a scholarship. No one is turned away.
We have a scholarship fund, and anyone may contribute to it. Please inquire—we are in a transition with software—via gender.radiation@gmail.com.
COST
Registration for Short Courses requires a fee-for-service, or successful scholarship award. Short Course fees are not a donation, and are not tax-deductible.
Fee for each class is on a sliding scale from $30 to $300 per class. You decide. Our time and expertise is valuable and we know our work is worth a lot! So, please think about it before you register and pay. For anyone unable to pay $30, we have a scholarship fund. The registration page has a check box to ask for scholarship support - check that and we’ll be in touch.
Registration is a two-part process: Follow the Registration link, complete the form. We will email you confirmation as a participant and it will have the link to pay, or, confirmation of your scholarship, if requested. Please watch for the email after you have completed Part 1. You are registered after payment, or acceptance of the scholarship award.
